Before Moses ever parted the Red Sea, confronted Pharaoh, or led God’s people to freedom, there were four people whose faith made his story possible: a mother, a father, a sister, and a few courageous women who feared God more than man.
“By faith Moses, after he was born, was hidden by his parents for three months, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they didn’t fear the king’s edict.”
Hebrews 11:23
Hebrews 11:23 reminds us that behind every great work of God is often a group of faithful people who may never stand in the spotlight. Without the fearless faith of Moses’ parents, there would have been no Exodus, no deliverance, and no Moses.
Most importantly, their story points us to Jesus, the greater Deliverer who came to set His people free.
1. Fearless Faith Protects
The story begins during one of the darkest seasons in Israel’s history. The Israelites had multiplied in Egypt, and Pharaoh feared their growing numbers. In response, he ordered the death of every Hebrew baby boy. Yet Moses’ parents refused to surrender their son to fear.
“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.”
Exodus 1:17
Throughout Scripture, we see that fear of God always produces courage before men. The Hebrew midwives risked their lives to protect innocent children because they feared the Lord more than Pharaoh.
Fearless faith doesn’t mean the absence of fear. It means choosing obedience even when fear is present.
Moses’ parents hid him for three months, trusting God with every passing day. When they could no longer keep him hidden, they placed him in a basket and set him among the reeds of the Nile River. The same Hebrew word used for Moses’ basket is used for Noah’s ark. Just as God protected Noah through the flood, Moses’ mother trusted God to protect her son.
As believers, we’re called to protect what God loves. We protect our families through prayer. We protect our children by teaching them God’s Word. We protect the vulnerable by standing for life and showing compassion to those in need.
Fearless faith protects what God loves.
2. Fearless Faith Provides
When Moses’ mother placed him in the basket, she wasn’t abandoning him. She was entrusting him to God’s care. What happened next could only be explained by God’s providence.
Pharaoh’s daughter arrived at the river at exactly the right moment. She discovered the basket. Moses cried. Her heart was moved with compassion. Then Moses’ own sister stepped forward and offered to find someone to care for the child.
The result?
Moses’ own mother was hired and paid to raise her son.
“Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.”
Exodus 2:9
God was working behind the scenes the entire time.
He provided the basket. He provided the river. He provided Pharaoh’s daughter. He provided protection. He provided a future.
God often provides through people who simply do what they can with what they have.
Moses’ parents did what they could do. Miriam did what she could do. Pharaoh’s daughter did what she could do.
God still works that way today.
Whether it’s caring for vulnerable children, supporting foster and adoptive families, serving others in need, or simply being available when God opens a door, fearless faith responds with obedience and trusts God with the results.
3. Fearless Faith Positions
God wasn’t just protecting Moses. He was positioning him.
By being raised in Pharaoh’s household, Moses received an education, opportunities, and experiences that would one day prepare him to lead God’s people out of slavery. What looked like a random series of events was actually the hand of God directing every step.
Fearless faith doesn’t just shield us from danger and supply our needs, it positions us exactly where God intends to use us.
God also used Moses’ siblings in significant ways. Aaron became Israel’s first high priest. Miriam became a prophetess and worship leader. Their family wasn’t perfect. They experienced conflict, disagreements, and failures. Yet God still used them.
That’s encouraging because none of our families are perfect either.
There are no perfect parents. No perfect children. No perfect leaders. There is only a perfect Savior.
And God’s grace is sufficient for every family willing to trust Him.
The Faith to Let Go
One of the most powerful moments in the story is when Moses’ mother places her son into the basket and releases him into God’s hands. Every parent understands that moment. There comes a time when we have to trust God with the people and situations we love most.
We put our children in the basket. We put our marriages in the basket. We put our futures in the basket. We put our fears, disappointments, and uncertainties in the basket.
And we trust that God is already working upstream.
What feels uncertain to us is never uncertain to Him.
The story of Moses ultimately points us to the greater Deliverer, Jesus Christ. When Israel needed a deliverer, God sent a baby. When the world needed a Savior, God sent a baby. Both Moses and Jesus faced rulers who ordered the death of children. Both spent time in Egypt. Both were sent by God to bring deliverance.
Yet Hebrews tells us that Jesus is greater than Moses.
Moses delivered people from physical slavery. Jesus delivers people from slavery to sin.
Moses led people through the wilderness. Jesus leads people into eternal life.
Moses points us to the greatest story ever told: God’s plan to rescue and redeem His people through Jesus Christ.
A Final Word of Hope
The story of Moses reminds us that God often uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. The names we remember aren’t Pharaoh’s. They’re the names of people who trusted God.
Jochebed. Miriam. Shiphrah. Puah.
Their fearless faith changed history. Your faith matters too.
You may never stand on a stage or become famous. You may feel unseen at times. But when you trust God, protect what He loves, provide for others, and faithfully follow His leading, your influence can extend far beyond what you can imagine.
Only heaven will reveal the full impact of a life lived by faith.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Proverbs 9:10
May we be people of fearless faith, trusting God with what matters most and believing that He is already working upstream.
