One of the most common questions I hear from people is this: How do I know when God is speaking to me? Maybe you’ve asked that too. Can I tell you something? God is still speaking today. The question is—are we listening?
We are in a series right now about how we experience Jesus through the five senses—sight, smell, taste, touch, and today, we’re focusing on hearing.
“He Who Has Ears, Let Him Hear”
When Jesus was asked the greatest commandment, He began with this: “Hear, O Israel…” (Mark 12:29). Not “see” or “feel”—but hear.
Hearing is central to our faith. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). From Genesis to Revelation, we see a God who speaks. He spoke to Adam and Eve in the garden. He spoke to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the prophets. In the New Testament, He spoke through Jesus, and today, He still speaks through His Word, His Spirit, and His people.
How Does God Speak Today?
- God Speaks Through His Word
The Bible is not just an ancient book, it is alive. Hebrews 1 says that in the past God spoke through the prophets, but now He speaks through His Son. Every time you open your Bible; it is an opportunity to hear from God. - God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit
Jesus said the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth (John 16:13). He is our counselor and comforter. He speaks to your heart, not with a shout, but with a whisper—what Scripture calls “a still small voice.” - God Speaks Through People and Circumstances
Sometimes God uses others to speak into our lives. Proverbs says there is wisdom in many counselors. God can also use blessing, disappointment, or even closed doors to redirect our path.
How Can You Discern God’s Voice?
There are a lot of voices in our world: your own thoughts, the opinions of others, and even the enemy. So how do you know when it is God?
- It will always align with Scripture. God will never contradict His Word.
- It will often challenge your flesh. We do not naturally want to do the things of God.
- It will require faith and courage. If it were easy, it would not require God.
- It may seem foolish to the world. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. but to us, it is the power of God.
Don’t Just Hear, Obey
James says we should not merely listen to the Word but do what it says (James 1:22). The danger of hearing and not responding is a hardened heart. Every time you ignore the nudge of the Spirit; your heart grows a little more calloused. Jesus told a story about different types of listeners, some hearts are hard, some are shallow, some are cluttered, and some are committed. What kind of soil is your heart?
What Voice Are You Listening To?
In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” He is not silent. He is knocking. He is calling. And if you open the door, He will meet you right where you are. You do not have to clean yourself up before you come. You come to Jesus as you are, and He will clean you up.
Let’s Pray
If you are ready to hear from God today, just pray this simple prayer:
“Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”
And if you have never trusted Jesus as your Savior, you can pray this:
“Jesus, I confess my need for You. Forgive me of all my sins. I believe You died for me and rose again. Today I open the door and invite You in. Speak to me. Lead me. I want to follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Experience Jesus for Yourself
If you prayed that prayer, we would love to walk with you in your next steps. Plan your visit at libertylive.church/visit, or fill out our Connect Card at libertylive.church/connect. This Easter season, do not just go through the motions, listen for the voice of the One who loves you, died for you, and is calling you by name.
When He is speaking—listen.
When He is knocking—open the door.
You were made to hear from God.
