In our series Letters from John, we’re journeying through 1, 2, and 3 John to uncover deep truths about our relationship with God. Today, we’re exploring 1 John 3, but first, let’s glance at the closing verse of chapter 2, where we find an essential phrase: “born of Him.” This phrase sets the tone for today’s message: How to Know You Are a Child of God.
Understanding God’s Love for Us
1 John 3:1 starts with a profound truth: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” This love isn’t just a feeling; it’s a powerful declaration that God has chosen us and adopted us into His family. When we genuinely grasp His love, we begin to understand our true identity as His sons and daughters.
Living in Righteousness
To be “born of Him” means more than knowing about God—it’s about reflecting His character. 1 John 2:29 says, “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.” Living righteously isn’t about perfection—it’s about a consistent desire to honor God with our lives. Righteous living is evidence that we are children of God.
Loving One Another
1 John 3:10 gives us a clear standard: “Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.” Love for others is a defining trait of God’s children. Our love flows from the love He first gave us, and it becomes a powerful testimony to the world of who we belong to.
A Heart of Obedience
Obedience is not about rigid rule-following—it’s a loving response to God’s grace. When we obey God’s commands, we reflect a heart that desires to please Him. This obedience is a sign of trust, love, and alignment with God’s will.
