How to See Jesus Clearly: Lessons from Palm Sunday

By: Pastor Dalton Stoltz

On Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem to the cheers of a crowd waving palm branches and shouting “Hosanna!” Yet, just days later, many of those same voices cried out for His crucifixion. They saw Him, but they didn’t truly see Him.

This raises a vital question for us today: Do we see Jesus for who He truly is, or only as we want Him to be?

Seeing with Spiritual Eyes

The crowd expected a political savior to overthrow Roman rule. When Jesus arrived on a donkey, a symbol of peace, they missed the significance. Their physical sight was clear, but their spiritual vision was blurred. Like them, we can be spiritually blind, focusing on our expectations rather than God’s revelations. To see Jesus clearly, we must look beyond our desires and recognize His true purpose.

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Faith requires us to trust in what we cannot see. The Apostle Paul reminds us, “For we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). When circumstances are challenging, and Jesus doesn’t meet our expectations, will we still trust Him? True faith means believing in Jesus’ plan, even when it doesn’t align with our own.

Focusing on the Eternal

The crowd’s focus on immediate liberation caused them to miss the eternal salvation Jesus offered. We, too, can become preoccupied with temporary concerns: career, comfort, control, and lose sight of the eternal.Jesus calls us to fix our eyes on what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). By shifting our focus, we can truly see Him and His purpose for our lives.

Opening Our Eyes

After His resurrection, Jesus walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They didn’t recognize Him until He opened their eyes (Luke 24:31). We need Jesus to open our spiritual eyes so we can see Him clearly.

Would You Pray This?

“Jesus, open my eyes to see You clearly. Remove any distractions or misconceptions that hinder my vision. Help me to trust in Your plan and focus on the eternal. Amen.”
