When you think about a “Hall of Fame,” a few places probably come to mind.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
But in Hebrews 11, we find something far greater, a Faith Hall of Fame.
This chapter walks us through story after story of ordinary people who trusted God in extraordinary ways. And it all begins with one foundational question:
What is faith?
The Reality of Faith
Hebrews 11:1 gives us the definition:
“Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.”
Faith is not abstract. It’s not wishful thinking. It’s not blind optimism. Faith is something solid. It is a foundation you can stand on. At its core, faith is trusting that something is true because God says it is true.
We exercise faith every single day without even thinking about it. You sit in a chair trusting it will hold you. You send an email believing it will arrive. You take medicine trusting it will help you.
And yet, many struggle to put their faith in God. That’s because the issue isn’t faith itself. The issue is the object of your faith. You can put your faith in money, in yourself, in ideas, or in systems, but none of those can save you. True, life-changing faith is not faith in faith. It is faith in God.
“It is not about the size of your faith but the object of your faith.”
Faith is not a leap into the dark. It is walking in the light of God’s Word. Hope is what you’re looking forward to. It gives faith something to hold on to. Without hope, faith has nothing to stand on.
That’s why you must guard what you’re listening to. The world will try to kill your hope, and when hope dies, faith weakens. But when you anchor your life in God’s promises, your faith becomes steady and strong.
The Reason for Faith
Hebrews 11:3 shifts our focus:
“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God…”
Faith helps us answer life’s biggest questions:
- Who am I?
- Where did I come from?
- Where am I going?
At the center of it all is this question: Do you believe there is a Creator?
It takes more faith to believe that everything came from nothing than to believe in a God who created everything with purpose. Creation points to design. Design points to a Designer.
And here’s why this matters so much:
If you can trust God with creation, you can trust Him with your situation.
“If you have faith to believe God spoke the world into existence, then there is no problem, difficulty, or crisis that is too difficult for God.”
Faith reminds us that God is not limited by what we see. He is working beyond what we can understand.
The Reward of Faith
Hebrews 11:6 makes it clear:
“Now without faith it is impossible to please God…”
Our primary goal in life should be simple: please God.
If you please God, it doesn’t matter who you don’t please. If you displease God, it doesn’t matter who you do please. Faith draws you closer to Him. And God responds to those who seek Him. He is not distant. He is not indifferent.
He rewards those who pursue Him.
That doesn’t mean life will always be easy. But it does mean your life will have eternal significance.
“God didn’t give us a list of perfect people; He gave us a list of people who trusted Him and walked by faith in spite of their imperfections.”
Abraham wasn’t perfect.
Sarah doubted.
Moses had a past.
Rahab had a story.
Yet they are remembered not for their failures, but for their faith.
Living by Faith
Faith is not just something you believe. It’s something you live. It moves you to action. It pushes you forward when things don’t make sense. It calls you to obey God, even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain.
Faith is not a feeling. It’s not waiting until everything is clear.
Faith is taking a step when God says go.
Scripture shows us that faith always leads to action:
- They offered
- They built
- They went
Faith is not passive. It is active.
