Mark Twain said the two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why you were born. Life is a journey. No one has arrived yet. Every believer has a common calling. This is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Every person also has a special calling, tailor-made just for you. The devil wants you to waste your life, but God wants you to fulfill your purpose.
Know God
In Ephesians 1:17, Paul prays that the Ephesians would know God better. If you ever wonder the reason you were put on earth, it’s to know God. You were made by God to know God. Only God can tell you why you were created. You were also made for eternity. One day your heart will stop beating but you will live on in either a place called heaven, or a place called hell. Ephesians 2:5 says, God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. It is by grace we have been saved. Knowing God is about being raised from death to life. We know God by spending time in prayer and time in the Word.
Find Community
“For he chose us in him before the creation…In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will” (Eph. 1:4-5). God never intended us to live life alone. God made us to be part of His family. Not because we deserved it, but just because He wanted to. You cannot grow spiritually unless you’re connected relationally. Why is community so important to your spiritual life? Divine design. God designed us that way. We are made in the image of God. We see relationships in the Trinity. God wants to use other people to grow us and he wants to use us to grow other people. Not only are we made to know God, but also to find community.
Serve People
Ephesians 2:8 says that “we are God’s handiwork, created to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” No two people are the same, but each one of us are His workmanship. Look at Psalm 139:13-14. God wired you to be you from the very beginning. Design reveals destiny! Discover your design and you will discover your destiny. God shaped you to serve Him. “Shape” can stand for S- Spiritual Gift, H- Heart, A- Abilities, P- Personality, E- Experiences. After Paul prays that we would know God better, he prays in verse 18 that we “may know what is the hope of His calling.” Our hope is connected to our calling. Our significance is found in something more meaningful than monetary and material success. God has a unique purpose for your life. You will be most fulfilled when God uses your life to touch someone else. Just like God has shaped me to serve Him, He’s given you the spiritual gift, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences you have so that you may serve Him and make a difference.
Leave a Legacy
It’s been said that the purpose of this life is to discover your gift. The meaning of this life is to give it away. Real joy and fulfillment do not come from pleasure or making a lot of money, but from knowing God and knowing you are making a difference. Jesus said the greatest of all is the one who serves. “…Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:43-45). It may sound overwhelming to change the world, but we can all change our world. Change has a ripple effect. Everyone has influence. Who’s going to be in Heaven because of you?
Paul said, “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me” (Acts 20:24). So many people say, “I just want to be happy. I just want to live the good life.” Looking good, feeling good, and having the goods will never be good enough. You will die a miserable person. You were made for more. Don’t waste your life. Give God the rest of your life. Move past your past. From this day forward become the man or the woman God made you to be. It all starts by knowing God.
