How to Keep Going When Life Feels Overwhelming: Lessons from Acts 18

Have you ever felt like giving up? Life’s challenges can leave us feeling exhausted, discouraged, and ready to throw in the towel. In Acts 18, we find the Apostle Paul at a similar crossroads. Arriving in Corinth—a city infamous for its immorality and opposition—Paul faced fear, loneliness, and exhaustion. Yet God met him there with encouragement and strength to keep going. Here are three powerful lessons from Acts 18 that can help you persevere through your own challenges.

Do Not Be Afraid: God’s Word is Your Strength

“The Lord said to Paul in a night vision, ‘Don’t be afraid, but keep on speaking and don’t be silent.’” (Acts 18:9) Even Paul, the great apostle, struggled with fear and anxiety. He was physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and facing resistance at every turn. But God reminded him—and reminds us—that we don’t need to live in fear. When fear grips your heart, cling to God’s promises. His Word is filled with “fear not” assurances that remind us He is in control. As 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

God Is With You: Trust His Presence and Protection

“For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.” (Acts 18:10) It’s one thing to know people are with you, but there’s nothing more comforting than knowing God is with you. In Corinth, a city full of hostility, God assured Paul of His protection and purpose. The same is true for you. Wherever God has placed you—at work, in your neighborhood, or in a new season of life—He has a plan. There are people He wants you to reach. Trust that His presence will sustain you, no matter the opposition you face.

Help Is on the Way: God Provides Community

Paul didn’t stay in Corinth alone. God sent Aquila, Priscilla, Silas, and Timothy to support him. These partners in ministry encouraged him, provided practical help, and ultimately carried the mission forward. We are not meant to do life or ministry alone. Whether it’s through a small group, a church family, or a trusted friend, God uses relationships to strengthen us and advance His kingdom. As Paul reminded Timothy: “The things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

Keep Your Eyes on Eternity

Acts 18 also points us toward the ultimate reward for faithfulness. As believers, we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ—not to determine our salvation, but to give an account of our lives and receive eternal rewards (2 Corinthians 5:10). Knowing that your work for Christ has eternal significance can give you the strength to persevere. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:13, “Each one’s work will become obvious… the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.” Let’s live in a way that honors God and leaves a legacy that lasts.
