Experience the Cross of Jesus with All Five Senses

Today is Good Friday, a day marked by silence, sorrow, and sacrifice. It is the day Jesus died for the sins of the world. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Savior of humanity was nailed to a Roman cross. For three of those hours, from noon to 3, darkness covered the land as the Light of the World was dying. It was not just a physical death, it was a divine transaction. He became sin for us so that we might become righteous before God. Good Friday is not just something to remember. It is something to experience. And God, in His wisdom, gave us five senses to help us do just that.

What Do You SEE?

“…they kept watch over Him there.” —Matthew 27:36

Imagine standing in the crowd and seeing Jesus stumble beneath the weight of the cross. His back torn by the whip, His face marred by a crown of thorns, His body broken and bloodied. This is not just a man, it’s the Lamb of God. You see injustice. You see love. You see the Savior. What do you see when you look at the Cross, a symbol of defeat or the greatest victory ever won?

What Do You HEAR?

“Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?’” —Matthew 27:46

Listen to the sounds of the crucifixion: the jeers of the crowd, the cracks of the whip, the cries of Jesus. Each word He spoke from the Cross, “Father, forgive them”… “It is finished”… “Into Your hands I commit My spirit”, was soaked in divine purpose. The question is: are you listening for His voice today?

What Do You SMELL?

Ephesians 5:2 says that Christ “gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

The Cross wasn’t clean. It wasn’t sanitary. Imagine the smell: the dust of Golgotha, the iron scent of blood, the sour sting of vinegar. But beyond that, there was the aroma of obedience, the fragrance of redemption. Does your life carry the aroma of Christ?

What Do You FEEL?

“Then they spit in His face and struck Him with their fists.” —Matthew 26:67

Feel the thorns. Feel the nails. Feel the wood of the cross. But also, feel His love for you. Feel the tear of His mother, the heartbreak of His followers, and the crushing weight of your sin laid on His shoulders. Let the Cross break your heart and move your soul.

What Do You TASTE?

“They offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused.” —Matthew 27:34

Jesus refused the drink meant to dull His pain because He came to take the full weight of sin’s bitterness, so we could drink from a different cup, the cup of salvation. Have you tasted His grace? Are you drinking from the well that never runs dry? Good Friday invites us not just to observe but to participate. It is a holy reminder that salvation cost Jesus everything, and He did it willingly, for you. As you reflect on the Cross, may it touch all of you: body, soul, and spirit.

This Easter, don’t just go through the motions. Experience Jesus. See His sacrifice. Hear His voice. Taste His grace. And if you are ready to follow Him, we want to help you take your next step. Plan your visit at libertylive.church/visit or fill out our Connect Card.

Jesus gave everything. The question is, have you given Him your heart?

Let’s not just remember the Cross. Let’s live changed by it.
