How Do I Move From Defeat In My Spiritual Life?

Have you ever felt like the glory of God is gone from your life? Like something is missing? Maybe you feel defeated in your faith, disconnected from God, and discouraged in your circumstances. In 1 Samuel 4-7, we see the story of God’s people go from Ichabod to Ebenezer: from “the glory has departed” to “thus far the Lord has helped us.”

What changed? And how can it change for you?

Five signs the glory of God has departed:

1. Losing Battles

Israel faced major defeat because they were fighting without God’s guidance. We lose spiritual battles when we operate in the flesh, not the Spirit. Romans 8:37 says we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

2. Prayerless Decisions

In 1 Samuel 4:3, Israel said, “Let’s bring the ark,” but they never asked God. Do you make decisions without praying? Even the little ones? Victory starts with surrender.

“Let’s bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us…” – 1 Samuel 4:3

3. Using God

They treated the Ark of the Covenant like a good luck charm. God is not a tool to bless our plans. He’s the Lord we submit to. Are you using God, or do you truly know Him?

4. Wicked Leadership

Eli’s sons were priests, but they were corrupt. Leadership matters in the home, in the church, and in our personal walk. When we tolerate sin, the glory fades.

5. Worldly Irreverence

The Philistines put the Ark in Dagon’s temple. But God made it clear that He doesn’t share His glory. When idols creep into our lives, we lose our spiritual edge.

Five Steps to See the Glory Return:

1. Repent and Return

1 Samuel 7:3 says, “Return to the Lord with all your heart.” Repentance is more than feeling sorry, it’s turning fully back to God.

2. Gather and Pray

Samuel called the people to Mizpah. They fasted, confessed their sins, and poured out their hearts. Do you want revival? It starts with prayer. We gather together to grow together.

3. Sacrifice and Obey

Samuel offered a lamb, a picture of Jesus. As they worshipped, God thundered from heaven and gave them the victory. Obedience brings breakthrough.

“Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it… and the Lord answered him.” – 1 Samuel 7:9

4. Remember and Celebrate

Samuel set up a stone and called it Ebenezer: “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” When God moves in your life, mark it. Celebrate His faithfulness!

5. Stay Faithful

Samuel didn’t disappear after revival. He kept serving. Spiritual victory isn’t just a moment, it’s a lifestyle of ongoing devotion.

Are You at an Ichabod or an Ebenezer Moment?

The glory doesn’t have to stay gone. Your story doesn’t end in defeat. God is still in the business of restoring, reviving, and renewing lives. But you have to stop using God and start seeking God. Let today be the day you say: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” If you’re ready to go from defeat to victory, you can plan your visit to Liberty or fill out a connect card so we can help you take your next step.

Don’t just go through the motions. Seek His presence, surrender your life, and live for His glory.

Thus far the Lord has helped us and He’s not finished yet.
