God’s Goodness: What It Really Means and How to Live It Out

We use the word “good” a lot in our daily lives. But when the Bible talks about goodness, it’s something deeper, something that reflects who we are in Christ. Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

The Source of Goodness

All true goodness flows from God. We don’t manufacture it, it begins with Him:

  • Genesis 1:31 – “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.”
  • Psalm 100:5 – “For the Lord is good, and His love endures forever.”
  • James 1:17 – “Every good and perfect gift is from above…”

“Goodness is a God-like trait, it’s not about being nice; it’s about reflecting His nature.”

The Struggle of Goodness

When sin entered the world, it distorted our ability to live out goodness. Romans 3:12 says, “There is none who does good, no, not one.” But through Jesus, we are made right again, justified, sanctified, and ultimately glorified.

Living in God’s Goodness

Brokenness can touch every area of life, but God restores. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us…” Abide in Him, and goodness will grow in your life.

The Service of Goodness

Goodness leads to action:

  • Trust and do good – Psalm 37:3
  • Don’t grow weary in doing good – Galatians 6:9
  • Shine through good deeds – Matthew 5:16
  • Overcome evil with good – Romans 12:21

“The more we focus on Jesus, the more His goodness flows through us.”

The Spirit of Goodness

If you’re filled with the Spirit, goodness will show in your life, just like it did in Tabitha (Acts 9:36) and Barnabas (Acts 11:24). Goodness is not about trying harder, it’s about surrender.

Will You Say YES to God’s Goodness?

You’ll never be good enough to reach heaven on your own. As Spurgeon said, “You might as well try to cross the Atlantic in a paper boat than try to get to heaven on good works.” That’s why Jesus came, to give us His goodness.
