How To Know You Are A Child of God

By: Pastor Daniel

In our series Letters from John, we’re journeying through 1, 2, and 3 John to uncover deep truths about our relationship with God. Today, we’re exploring 1 John 3, but first, let’s glance at the closing verse of chapter 2, where we find an essential phrase: “born of Him.” This phrase sets the tone for today’s message: How to Know You Are a Child of God.

Understanding God’s Love for Us

1 John 3:1 starts with a profound truth, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” This love isn’t just a feeling; it’s a powerful declaration that God has chosen us and adopted us into His family. This is the foundation of knowing we are His children. When we genuinely grasp His love for us, we begin to understand our identity as His sons and daughters.

Living in Righteousness

To be “born of Him” means more than just knowing about God—it’s about reflecting His character. As 1 John 2:29 says, “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.” As children of God, we’re called to live in a way that reflects His righteousness. This isn’t about perfection but about pursuing a life that honors Him. Doing what is right becomes a visible sign that we belong to Him.

Loving One Another

1 John 3:10 gives us a clear standard: “Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.” Loving others is one of the most powerful signs of a transformed heart. God’s children are marked by love—love for their neighbors, their friends, and even those who are difficult to love. Our love for others flows from the love God has poured out on us, and it’s a powerful testimony to the world around us.

A Heart of Obedience

As God’s children, we’re called to align our lives with His commands. In John’s letters, we see that obedience is not about following rules out of obligation; it’s about living in response to God’s love. When we experience His grace, our natural response is to live in a way that pleases Him. It’s a life marked by love, righteousness, and a sincere desire to follow His path.
